Coyotes in Toluca Lake

Gregory Randall of Animal Services spoke to concerned neighbors recently at the monthly Neighborhood Council Meeting.  The meeting was quite informative.  Ground zero for the coyotes seem to be in the area around Forman and Camarillo.  He said the City does not trap or kill coyotes as they have in the past.  He said homeowners could privately pay for a trapper, however, it is quite costly and is normally not effective in that the coyotes usually come back.  Some of the effective measures he did suggest were:
  • If you see a coyote, please email Gregory.randall@lacity.org.  Tell him the date, time and location of the sighting.  That way he can track their activity, movements and numbers
  • Make yoursleft seem "big and aggressive" and yell, wave your arms and move towardsd the coyote - this scares them.  Carry whistles and noisemakers
  • Cut off any food sources left outside
  • Secure small pets
  • Cut shrubs (if possible) where they may be living
  • If there is construction in your area, talk to the contractor to make sure they cover all trash containers and do not leave food around.
He mentioned a neighborhood in Echo Park that was having a serious coyote problem.  They followed many of these measures and it seemed to work.  Dealing with coyotes is like dealing with crime.  The coyote will move onto another area where the food source is abundant and they don’t have a bunch of crazy neighbors yelling at them, just as a criminal will focus on neighborhoods with unlocked windows, no alarms, and neighbors who are not alert!

A special thanks to Alice Roth, Field Deputy for Councilman Tom LaBonge, for putting us in contact with Officer Randall!

The benefits of this class are many.

  • The class is free.
  • CERT courses begin at 7pm Wednesday, August 25 at The Toluca Lake Unity Church, 4301 Cahunega and Whipple
  • Courses run for seven (7) consecutive weeks through 6 October.  Each class is 2.5 hours.
The Toluca Lake Homeowners Association is co-sponsor. As an extension of Toluca Lake Neighborhood Watch Heidi Dublin is coordinator.  She can be reached via email at hmdublin@mac.com/phone 818.7694317. We  hope you, our Tolucan neighbors, will join in this  pro-active approach to safe guarding   our community.

LA City Bureau of Sanitation Is Reminding Stakeholders to Inspect Their Sewer Lines
The Department of Public Works, Bureau of Sanitation (BOS) requests that stakeholders inspect their lateral sewer and take corrective action as necessary to avoid emergency and costly repair. Aging laterals are susceptible to damage. Tree roots and debris can enter a lateral through cracks or loose joints and restrict sewage flow. Roots can ultimately cause collapse of the lateral over time.  Please email questions to sewer.root@lacity.org.
